President Obama says he doesn't know if Hillary Rodham Clinton will seek his job in 2016, but she would do well if she does.

"I don't know what she's going to decide to do, but I know that if she were to run for president, I think she'd be very effective at that," Obama said in an interview broadcast Friday on "Live With Kelly and Michael."

Obama also pushed back on the idea that, given the brutal primary battle they waged in 2008, he initiated a "marriage of convenience" when he made Clinton secretary of state.

"I always admired her," Obama said. "As soon as she got here she couldn't have been more effective, more loyal -- and since that time we've become really really good friends."

He also said: "We're buddies."

Obama had a private lunch with Clinton on Thursday at the White House.

The president lunches Friday with another possible 2016 candidate, Vice President Biden.

"You know, I've been blessed to have some people around me like her (Clinton), and Vice President Biden, and my chief of staff (Denis McDonough), who are just great, hard working effective people," Obama said. "And I love them to death."
