President Obama called the president of Turkey on Friday to express condolences for the lives lost in a mine explosion and fire earlier this week.

Obama spoke with Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul, the National Security Council said Friday in a statement, telling him that "the United States stands ready to provide any assistance that could help those affected."

At least 284 people have been confirmed dead after the mine accident in Soma, Turkey.

"President Obama expressed that our prayers are with the families and loved ones of those suffering from this accident," said the statement.
