A California Highway Patrol officer was able to coax a Chihuahua off a highway median using a protein bar, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

The dog wasn't hurt, and was taken to an animal shelter.

It's unclear how the dog got to the median on Highway 680 during Fridayhighway patrol officer who rescued the dog, John Fransen, told the Mercury News that someone might have left the animal there.

"As sad as it sounds, it actually happens pretty often," Fransen told the Mercury News.

The photo of the rescue, tweeted by CHP's Contra Costa division, was retweeted more than 730 times. And it was liked by more than 64,700 people when posted on Facebook by KGO-TV in Sacramento.
