WASHINGTON -The Secret Service detained a man Tuesday after he began to drive his car into the White House compound after joining a motorcade.

"An unauthorized vehicle trailed in behind the motorcade," said Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie.

The incident took place at 4:40 p.m., at an outer White House checkpoint located at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Officials locked down the White House for an hour, clearing the North Lawn of people (including television personnel preparing to do broadcasts).

The Secret Service identified the man as Mathew Evan Goldstein, 55, and said he is a pass holder at the Treasury Department. He was arrested and charged with unlawful entry.
