Both President Obama and Vice President Biden used the Cinco de Mayo holiday Monday to push for an immigration bill pending in the Republican-run House.

"I am convinced that America's prosperity and security depend on comprehensive, common-sense immigration reform," Obama said at a White House reception for Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates Mexico's military victory over France in 1862.

Noting that the Democratic-run Senate has passed an immigration bill, Obama asked the supportive crowd "to get out there and mobilize" in an effort to pressure the GOP House.

During another Cinco de Mayo event, held at the vice president's residence, Biden put the spotlight on GOP House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"It's time for John -- he's a good man, John Boehner -- to stand up and other Republicans to stand up," Biden said. "Not for us to stand up. We've already stood up."

Many Republicans oppose the Senate immigration bill because it includes a pathway to citizenship for those who are already in the country illegally, a provision that critics call amnesty for lawbreakers.

Boehner and other Republicans have also questioned whether the Obama administration will truly enforce new border security provisions.

"If the Vice President truly shares the Speaker's desire to get reform done, he should encourage his boss -- the President -- to stop arbitrarily enforcing the laws already on the books and work to build trust with Republicans and the American people," said Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck.
