President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at the Lyndon Johnson library on Thursday. / Carolyn Kaster, AP

AUSTIN -- Before his speech Thursday on Lyndon Johnson and the civil rights laws, President Obama toured the LBJ library -- and ran into an opportunity for some presidential spouse humor.

"Michelle was in particular interested of a recording in which Lady Bird is critiquing President Johnson's (speaking) performance," Obama said at the top of his remarks.

As the crowd at the LBJ library chuckled, Obama said the first lady told him, "come, come, you need to listen to this!"

Mrs. Obama "pressed the button and nodded her head" as the president listened to Mrs. Johnson give her presidential husband some tips.

"Some things do not change," Obama reported. "Even 50 years later."
