President Obama leaves Wednesday for a two-day trip to Texas that includes somber duty.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama travel to Fort Hood for a memorial service in honor of those who died in last week's mass shooting.

After the April 2 shooting - the second in five years at Fort Hood - Obama said that "many of the people there have been on multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. They serve with valor; they serve with distinction. And when they're at their home base they need to feel safe."

After the memorial service, Obama travels to Houston to attend a pair of Democratic fundraisers.

The Obamas remain in Houston overnight.

On Thursday, Obama will visit the Lyndon Johnson presidential library in Austin to speak about the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
