The DNC plans to start posting on Twitter on behalf of the Vice President Biden on Monday. / Cliff Owen AP

Vice President Biden is stepping up his Twitter presence to help out fellow Democrats up for re-election.

The @JoeBiden account - which has been dormant for more than a year - began tweeting again on Monday. The account - which had previously been operated by President Obama's re-election campaign - will now be operated by the Democratic National Committee.

"Dusting off the Twitter handle for a big midterm election year. Let's get to it, folks! ‚??Joe" the vice president posted on Twitter Monday morning.

The Office of the Vice President has maintained an official Twitter account with the handle @VP. Biden occasionally pens tweets to that account himself, but most posts are drafted by his aides.

Interestingly, if Biden decides to make another run for the White House and wants to use the handle, he'll have to pay the DNC.
