Firefighters battle a house fire Saturday near Mulberry, Ind. / John Terhune, (Lafayette, Ind.) Journal & Courier

Twin 3-year-old boys died from injuries sustained in a Saturday morning fire at a home in near Mulberry, Ind., the sheriff's office reported.

Landon Tyler Abbott and Liam Cecil Abbott were brought out of the burning home by Tippecanoe County sheriff's Deputy Shane Howard and Sgt. Andy Cree.

Cree and Howard entered a first-floor bedroom of the house through a slightly open window.

They found one boy on a bed and another on the floor.

One child was taken to Indiana University Health Arnett and the other to St. Elizabeth East hospital, both in Lafayette, where they were pronounced dead.

The deputies were the first to arrive at the home after 911 dispatchers received a call at 10:58 a.m., Cree said.

They found Brandon L. Abbott, 31, and Nicole L. Thomas, 31, on the front lawn of the house near the Clinton County line. Both had burn injuries.

Abbott is the boys' father, Cree said.

Thomas was transported by helicopter to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, where she was being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Cree said.
