Michelle Byrom / The (Jackson, Miss.) Clarion-Ledger

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Mississippi Supreme Court on Thursday denied a motion by the state to set an execution date for death row inmate Michelle Byrom.

Byrom, 57, was convicted of hiring a hit man to shoot her husband, Edward Byrom Sr., in 1999. The state Attorney General's Office had requested Thursday be Byrom's execution date

Byrom would be the first woman executed in Mississippi since 1944.

Byrom argued in documents filed with the state Supreme Court that she has new evidence that her son, Edward Byrom Jr., killed her husband and that she never hired a hitman as her son told prosecutors.
