It's no surprise that a pope would be more popular than a U.S. president, but a new poll provides details ahead of Thursday's meeting between Pope Francis and President Obama.

Francis has an 85% approval rating among American Catholics and a 63% approval rating among all Americans, according to the survey by the Saint Leo (Fla.) University Polling Institute.

Obama's overall approval rating is 47%.

Says Saint Leo: "When President Barack Obama meets with Pope Francis Thursday, the president might want to ask the Pope for a few pointers about how to attain a high approval rating."

The two leaders meet at Vatican City.
