Kathy Brennanā??s Shrimp Wonton Soup from "Keepers" (Rodale, 2013) calls for store-bought wonton skins and canned chicken broth as time-savers. / KYLE GRANTHAM

Delaware home cook Kathy Brennan scored a big win this past weekend in Chicago.

Brennan, who co-wrote the Keepers cookbook (Rodale, 2013) with her friend, food blogger Caroline Campion, was "stunned and thrilled" to win the General Cookbook category at the International Association of Culinary Professionals Awards.

Brennan, a Hockessin, Del., resident and Campion, of Gladstone, N.J., were competing against famed chef Alice Waters for her book, The Art of Simple Food II: Recipes, Flavor and Inspiration from the New Kitchen Garden (Clarkson Potter, 2013), and Mollie Katzen, author of the well-known vegetarian cookbook, The Moosewood Cookbook, whose latest publication is The Heart of the Plate (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2013).

How big is this honor? Consider this: Katzen has more than 6 million books in print and is listed by the New York Times as one of the best-selling cookbook authors of all time.

"It's kind of like going up against Meryl Streep, twice," Campion wrote on her blog, devilandegg.com.

While working as food editors at Saveur magazine, Brennan and Campion, both working mothers, often chatted about what they were making for dinner that night. Recipes and ideas for winning dishes were swapped and it was reassuring to hear that someone else was in the same situation.

The pair hit upon the idea for Keepers, which features more than 125 "tried-and-true" weeknight recipes as well as tips on food, shopping, and family meals.

The name of the cookbook comes from tasting dishes at the New York-based magazine's test kitchen. If a recipe won over tasters, it was labeled a "keeper."

"Thank you to everyone for all your support and to our team for helping us get here!" Brennan and Campion wrote on their "Keepers Cooks" Facebook page.
