Walter Bruhl Jr.'s obituary, as written by Walter Bruhl Jr. / posted by Sam Bruhl to Reddit

After Walter George Bruhl Jr. died Sunday at the age of 80, his family discovered he had written his own obituary.

The obit opens with, "Walter George Bruhl Jr. of Newark and Dewey Beach DE is a dead person, he is no more, he is bereft of life, he is deceased, he has wrung down the curtain and gone to join the choir invisible, he has expired and gone to meet his maker," referencing a Monty Python sketch.

Grandson Sam Bruhl wrote on Facebook, "Typical of my PopPop: he cut out the middleman and wrote his own ... obituary. He's the only man I've ever known to be able to add his own humor like this."

The obit details Bruhl's life - he "drifted" through the Philadelphia school system, served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and worked in engineering technology for more than 30 years.

Bruhl was married for 57 years to his wife, Helene, who he said could now purchase the mink coat he had refused her "because he believed only minks should wear mink," according to the obit.

Bruhl requested that he be cremated since his wife refused to honor his request - "to have him standing in the corner of the room with a glass of Jack Daniels in his hand so that he would appear natural to visitors."

The self-penned obit was published in full in the Cape Gazette in Delaware.

The obituary closes with a call for everyone who remembered Bruhl to raise their glass and drink in his memory.

"Instead of flowers, Walt would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for some poor unfortunate soul in his name," Bruhl wrote.

Sam Bruhl posted the obit on Reddit, resulting in condolences, appreciation and inspiration to perform acts of kindness.

One commenter wrote, "I'm going to pay the tab of the car behind me in whatever drive through I find myself in, in honor of your grandfather."
