President Obama made a congratulatory call Monday to new Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Obama "expressed support for Prime Minister Renzi's leadership on creating economic growth and jobs," said a White House readout. "And he looks forward to continued close U.S.-Italian partnership on Afghanistan, Libya, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and security and defense cooperation."

Obama and Renzi meet face-to-face in Rome next month.
