CHICAGO (AP) - The MacArthur Foundation has chosen seven organizations in three nations to receive its annual nonprofits grants, awarding as much as $1 million to groups whose work range from promoting the rights of Nigerian women to researching anti-crime programs in Chicago.

The Chicago-based foundation announced the grants Thursday. It says the nonprofits are getting the funds in recognition of both past success and future endeavors.

Five groups will receive $1 million each through the 2014 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. They are the Washington-based National Housing Trust, NatureServe in Arlington, Va.; New York-based ProPublica; The Citizen Lab of Toronto; and the University of Chicago Crime Lab.

Grants of $750,000 each were given to Nigeria's Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative and the Washington-based Campaign Legal Center.
