A wreck involving a school bus carrying Lafayette High School's baseball team has killed four. / Claire Taylor, The (Lafayette, La.) Advertiser

LAFAYETTE, La. -- A school bus collided with a car Saturday in St. Mary Parish, La., killing four people in the car, police said.

Minor injuries were reported among those on the school bus, said Trooper Stephen Hammons of the Louisiana State Police.

According to a state trooper on the scene, there were five people in the car, including three children. Four were ejected during the crash. A male who was sitting in the front right passenger seat was airlifted to a hospital.

A child seat was located at the scene, but it was not likely used, the state trooper said.

Lafayette High School Principal Patrick Leonard confirmed the bus was carrying the school's baseball team, which was on its way to a scrimmage. Coaches were also aboard the bus. Leonard said he is not aware of any life-threatening injuries to any of the bus passengers.

Leonard said his understanding is that the other vehicle had crossed over the center line and hit the bus head-on.

Some bus passengers were transported to area hospitals, but Leonard said he believes those were for precautionary reasons.

According to an Acadian Ambulance Twitter post, Acadian responded to the crash and transported 11 patients using three Air Med helicopters and eight ground units.

The crash occurred near the intersection of U.S. 90 and La. 317 in St. Mary, Hammons said.
