The Apple Store's entry on Splashy Fish, a game similar to Flappy Bird, recently taken off the Apple Store. / Apple Store

Flappy Bird flew the Apple Store coop forever, supposedly, so what's a bird gamer to do? Rest assured: There are plenty of 'flappy' options.

Flappy Bird is a simple free game app. Users tap repeatedly on their device to keep a pixelated bird afloat and navigating between green pipes. It skyrocketed up the Apple and Google Play charts then drew global attention when the No. 1 hit was pulled from the store. Why? The Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen tweeted that he's taking the game down because he "cannot take it anymore." He also tweeted that he hates the game for ruining his simple life. He told USA TODAY that he had to take the game off the market because people had become addicted to it.

Is this all just a big publicity stunt so more people will download the developer's follow-up games before those also get yanked? Influential blogger Robert Scoble thinks so, writing that Nguyen made enough for several years' salary with Flappy Bird.

Whatever the controversy, there are plenty of other fish in the sea if you're missing Flappy Bird, like the bird fish game: Splashy Fish, which is most like the original bird game. There's also Flappy Fish, Flappy Unicorn, Flappy Plane; the list could go on.
