President Obama and Jay Leno / Paul Drinkwater, AP

President Obama and Jay Leno are linked in politico-cultural history: Obama is the first president to appear on The Tonight Show while in office.

As Leno prepares to retire from the program in favor of Jimmy Fallon, the White House says Obama will miss the two-decade-long host.

"He (Obama) is a fan," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. "This is the end of an era."

Carney also said of Leno: "The president wishes him well; we all do."
