Former first lady Barbara Bush has been hospitalized in Houston for treatment of a "respiratory related issue," her husband's office said Tuesday night.

The 88-year-old Bush was in stable condition at Methodist Hospital in Houston. KPRC-TV reported she was being treated for early signs of pneumonia.

Jim McGrath, a spokesman for her husband, President George H.W. Bush, said her condition didn't change overnight and there was "nothing new to report" on Wednesday.

In a statement released after the news broke, the office of former president George H. W. Bush said she was admitted Monday.

"She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care. Updates will be issued when warranted," the statement said.

Bush was first lady from 1989 to 1993. She is also the mother of former president George W. Bush and former Florida governor Jeb Bush.
