Tony Romo's season is officially over. / Geoff Burke, USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's season is officially over, and backup Kyle Orton's is about to begin.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett told news reporters Romo underwent back surgery Friday morning and will be placed on injured reserve.

That confirms what a person with knowledge of the injury told USA TODAY Sports on Monday: Romo is done for the season and Orton will start Sunday's NFC East title game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Romo had a herniated disk that hobbled him during last week's comeback win over Washington, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Cowboys hadn't declared him out.

That changed Friday, and now Orton ?? who hasn't started a game since 2011 with the Kansas City Chiefs ?? will be thrust into the spotlight for Sunday's primetime finale.

The Cowboys signed Jon Kitna out of retirement to back up Orton against the Eagles.
