Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., is highlighting his belief in God and the Bible's teachings in a new ad for his re-election campaign.

"I'm not ashamed to say I believe in God and I believe in his word," Pryor says in the TV ad that began running statewide Wednesday. "The Bible teaches us no one has all the answers. Only God does. And neither political party is always right."

With a Bible in his hands, Pryor says, "This is my compass, my North Star. It gives me comfort and guidance to do what is best for Arkansas."

Pryor, considered the most vulnerable Senate Democrat in the 2014 elections, is being challenged by GOP Congressman Tom Cotton in what is likely to be one of the nation's top races next year.

KATV, the ABC affiliate in Little Rock, got an early copy of the Pryor ad and highlighted it in a feature about the changing tone of campaign advertising for the holidays.

Pryor has been stressing his independence and how he puts Arkansas first in his priorities, even as Republicans criticize him for his ties to President Obama. Religious faith is typically strong in Arkansas, where many people identify themselves as Christian and Protestant, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture.
