OAKDALE, Minn. - Police are building a case against a 34-year-old man accused of opening fire on a number of targets in his own neighborhood Monday evening, killing a 10-year-old boy and wounding two others.

The suspect began randomly firing on vehicles, including a minivan in which the victim and his mother were riding, a little after 6 p.m. CST Monday, Oakdale Police Chief Tom Sullivan said. After they were hit, the mother pulled into a grocery store parking lot in this eastern Twin Cities suburb and called 911.

Paramedics rushed the boy to a nearby hospital where he died, he said.

His 39-year-old mother was struck in the arm. A 68-year-old woman in another vehicle was struck in the hand, Sullivan said. The women are expected to recover

The suspect was arrested about a mile away from the parking lot where police found the victims, according to an incident report released Tuesday. A handgun and ammunition were recovered nearby.

The suspect's home is about a half mile from both the parking lot and the location of his arrest, according to the Washington County jail roster.

Investigators were on the scene Tuesday in search of additional spent casings and damage over an area that spans six blocks. The 34-year-old is being held on potential charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

No other suspects are being sought, Sullivan said.

The boy who died, whose name has not been released, attended Oakdale Elementary School about a mile from the shooting scene. About a dozen social workers and psychologists are helping students cope with the loss of their fourth-grade classmate, District 622 spokeswoman Jennifer McNeil said Tuesday.
