Eagles defensive end Trent Cole underwent wrist surgery but is expected to be fully recovered well ahead of training camp. / Howard Smith, USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Trent Cole underwent surgery on his hand this week, according to a person informed of the procedure.

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the Eagles haven't released any information on Cole's surgery, said it wasn't a major operation but could sideline Cole for a portion of the spring.

The person said Cole has been dealing with the issue for over a year and is hoping this procedure will finally correct it, especially since Cole relies on using his hands so much.

The 30-year-old Cole, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, signed a contract extension through the 2017 season last year. He's expected to remain on the roster despite a down year in 2012 (three sacks) and new coordinator Billy Davis' being a proponent of the 3-4 defensive front.
