Dr. Phil McGraw has interviewed Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the California man who allegedly is behind the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax, for a broadcast to be aired at a later time, according to a CBS spokesperson.
Stacey Luchs, senior vice president of communications for CBS, told USA TODAY Sports' Jeffrey Martin on Friday that the interview had taken place.
The interview is expected to be the first on-camera interview for Tuiasosopo, who is accused of duping Te'o, the former Notre Dame all-American linebacker and Heisman Trophy finalist. Tuiasosopo is alleged to have created a fictional person named Lennay Kekua, with whom Te'o engaged in an extended relationship via phone and social media without ever meeting in person.
Te'o had been told she had died of leukemia in September but received a phone call Dec. 6 saying that she was alive. He did not reveal that call nor the fact that she did not exist until Deadspin.com reported their relationship was a hoax Jan 16.
In addition to a statement released on the day of the Deadspin report, Te'o has spoken to ESPN in an interview taped off-camera and Thursday appeared on a taping of Katie, Katie Couric's syndicated ABC talk show.
