Derrick Martin won a ring as a member of the Giants in 2011. / The Post-Crescent

Sunday was rough for New England Patriots safety Derrick Martin, who was on the inactive list as his team lost the AFC Championship Game to the Baltimore Ravens.

Things got much worse.

While the game was being played, his Aurora, Colo., home was robbed and ransacked while at least one adult and multiple children were in the house, according to The Denver Post.

"We don't know if he was specifically targeted or not," Frank Fania of the Aurora Police Department said of Martin. "There was nothing said during the robbery that would indicate that."

No one was harmed, but the robbers were armed.

"No shots were fired, no threats were made," Fania said. "Thankfully no one was hurt."

Martin is a veteran of seven NFL seasons and narrowly missed reaching his second consecutive Super Bowl. He was a member of the New York Giants in 2011. He also played for the eventual champion Green Bay Packers in 2010 but wasn't on the Super Bowl roster.

Martin made five tackles in five games for the Patriots in 2012.
