Some of the coldest air in years will howl into the north-central and northeastern USA this weekend. Meanwhile, after a chilly and snowy week, the South and most of the West will stay dry and rather mild.

Winter unleashed: Frigid air will dive into northeast Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin during the day on Saturday. Temperatures in these areas are only likely to be in the single digits or near zero by Sunday as the cold air roars south.

After a mild Saturday for other parts of the Midwest, the intense cold will move further south and east by Sunday. High temperatures in most of the Midwest and around the Great Lakes will be about 20 degrees colder Sunday than they will be Saturday.

AccuWeather reports that colder air will be moving into Foxboro, Mass., for the AFC Championship game Sunday evening on gusty winds, after a mild start to the day. The NFC Championship will be determined indoors in Atlanta, Ga., Sunday afternoon.

The cold will continue to move farther east and south by Monday, making for a brisk and chilly Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C., where high temperatures in the 30s are likely.

Great Lakes snow: As the cold air moves in, lake-effect snow is forecast around the Great Lakes and interior Northeast this weekend, especially in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and northern New England. The heaviest snow should fall in northern Michigan and downwind of Lake Ontario in New York.

Mostly mild elsewhere: The West and South should see a mainly dry weekend, although a few showers are possible along the east coast of Florida. Temperatures should be at or slightly above average. Pleasant readings in the 70s expected for parts of Southern California, southern Arizona, southern Texas, and Florida.
