We learn something new every day. There's grand theft auto. And then there's grand theft scooter.
Florida redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker was arrested and booked into the Alachua County Jail in Gainesville, Fla., on Wednesday for charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and a non-moving traffic violation.
The kicker: The motor vehicle was a scooter, not an automobile.
"He was observed by one of our police officers riding on a scooter that did not have a tag attached to the scooter," Maj. Brad Barber told 247Sports. "Traffic stop was initiated, and during that stop it was determined that he was driving on a license that had been suspended. He was aware of that. The scooter, in fact, was stolen."
The grand theft auto charge is a third-degree felony and the traffic violation is a second-degree misdemeanor.
Dunker was in Alachua County court Thursday morning. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered not to have any contact with the alleged victim in the case.
Dunker said he had paid $600 for the scooter. Gainesville attorney Huntley Johnson, who is representing Dunker, said he's uncertain if Dunker has a receipt for the sale but noted $600 would have been a fair price for a used scooter in the condition it was in.
"I'd hate to count the number of times I had a transaction where I didn't have a receipt,'' Johnson said.
Dunker is expected to compete for a starting job on the 2013 team, pending the current situation. He redshirted during the 2012 season.
Florida coach Will Muschamp has had 15 player arrests since arriving in Gainesville in December 2011. Dunker is the sixth in the past year.
Florida athletics spokesman Steve McClain said Muschamp is aware of the incident and will address when he returns from a recruiting trip.
