More than 35 people, including several children, were found crammed inside a shipping container on a freighter at an Eastern England dock Saturday morning, according to multiple media outlets.

One man died from the conditions discovered at the Tilbury Docks near Essex, England, after dockworkers were alerted due to "screaming and banging" from the container, Superintendent Trevor Roe of the Essex Police told the BBC.

The survivors were said to be recovering "fairly quickly in most cases" at a local hospital, Roe said. Many were treated for dehydration and hypothermia.

The freighter Norstream was being unloaded at the cargo-heavy dock from Belgium with more than 50 other containers when the human-filled cargo container was found.

Roe told CNN that the people on board were from the Indian subcontinent and that police were conducting a homicide investigation.

No further details were available about how long the group were inside the container and where they had entered it.
