MELBOURNE, Fla. - A 10-year-old girl was apparently the victim of a shark bite Saturday in shallow water off a beach in Florida.

The girl screamed after the bite in foot-deep water near Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach.

Beachgoers immediately helped the girl out of the water at about 1:30 p.m. She had two puncture wounds in the area of her right foot and ankle, officials said.

A Brevard County lifeguard treated the victim's injuries before she was taken by paramedics to Cape Canaveral Hospital, according to Eisen Witcher, Brevard County Ocean Rescue assistant chief.

The girl's injuries were considered non-life threatening.

The beach was closed for at least an hour as a precaution after the incident.

Officials had no information about the size or type of shark involved in the incident.
