British Airways says it is suspending flights to Sierra Leone and Liberia as those West African nations struggle to contain an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

The airline will suspend its routes to those nations through the end of the month "due to the deteriorating public health situation in both countries," British Airways says in a statement quoted by The Wall Street Journal.

BA's move follows a similar one by Dubai-based Emirates, which on Saturday suspending its service to Guinea ?? another West African nation hit by the Ebola virus in recent weeks.

Among U.S. carriers, Delta Air Lines is allowing customers flying to, from or through certain West Africa airports to make a one-time change to their tickets with no penalties. Some restrictions apply.

As for British Airways, it says it will continue to monitor the health situation in West Africa as it considers resuming service after August. Prior to the suspension of service, BA flew four flights a week between London and Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Monrovia, Liberia, on 189-seat Boeing 767 seats, according to the Journal.

Since it was detected in March, the number of suspected and confirmed cases attributed to Ebola in the West African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria stands at 1,603, including 887 deaths, according to USA TODAY.

U.S. health officials on Thursday issued a travel warning for Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

"Ebola is worsening in West Africa," Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in announcing the advisory against "non-essential" travel to those nations.

Meanwhile, USA TODAY reports world and U.S. health officials have urged airline crews to isolate passengers who show symptoms of the Ebola virus if they have recently traveled to the outbreak-stricken West African countries.
