There are 17,000 water tanks above the streets of Manhattan. Word Above the Street, a non-profit group, is targeting them for its first initiative. The Water Tank Project will wrap pieces of art around the tanks to try to raise awareness of water conservation issues. The first tank was wrapped in art Thursday morning.

Creative Director Mary Jordan, who founded the group, discovered firsthand the power of clean water when she was making a film in Ethiopia and caught a water-borne illness. "A young girl nursed me back to health and made me promise her that I would do something about water in any form possible," Jordan said. "This is now my way of doing it."

There are many more water tanks to be wrapped in artwork, and Jordan sees the project as a chance to educate people about the global water issues. "Understand that we have to reduce our plastic waste, reduce our meat consumption and really conserve our water," Jordan said.
