Polk County deputies recovered 44,000 marijuana plants from a wooded area in Goodrich, Texas on Monday, July 28, 2014. / KHOU-TV

GOODRICH, Texas -- It's being called a record-breaking pot bust south of Livingston, Texas, and now we're learning more about the operation.

A hunter getting a deer lease ready for the season spotted the plants by chance and called the law. So far, more than 44,000 plants have been found. Officers have cleared 10 fields. They still have 16 more to go.

If you go deeper into some private properties in Goodrich, you'll find creature comforts of those who ran this massive operation.

"These guys are building trenches, pumps, set up irrigation systems," said Polk County Chief Deputy Byron Lyons."They've got their own little camps, tents, tent cities. It's a pretty elaborate set up."

Chief Lyons says they're getting to the property by taking the Trinity River and then the Long King Creek. Once they're here, they don't leave.

Someone else sneaks on the property weekly and brings the workers food. As you can imagine, the secret world in the woods is surprising to those who live in Goodrich.

"I was amazed," admitted Lauretta Patterson. "I couldn't believe here in Goodrich that something like that would happen."

At the camp you can see the Styrofoam cups used to nurture small plants and the hoses to water the larger ones.

The layout is something that Lance Sarver, from Woodville, says he's only seen on TV.

"I've watched that uh the California grow people where they use the river to feed water to the plants," he said. "You figure you could smell it cuz it has its own smell."

Bulldozers are creating makeshift roads to help clear the pot out. The plants they can't haul off on land will be lifted out by helicopter.

The operation is expected to be complete by Tuesday and officers are guarding the property overnight. So far, one arrest has been made but no names have been released.
