Palestinians chant slogans as they celebrate outside the Shifa hospital in Gaza City, late July 20. The Hamas' armed wing said it has captured an Israeli soldier during fighting in the Gaza Strip. Speaking on a Hamas television station, spokesman Abu Ubaida said "we have captured a Zionist soldier and the occupation has not admitted that." IDF sources said that the Hamas claim sounded dubious. / Lefteris Pitarakis AP

A spokesman for Hamas' military wing said Sunday it has captured an Israeli soldier during fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Multiple news agencies reported that a masked spokesman identified as Abu Ubaida appeared on Hamas television to announce the capture.

There was no immediate response from Israel.

Al Jazeera America television reported it had been unable to confirm the claim but that celebrations had broken out in Gaza over the news.
