Summertime heat, humidity and thunderstorms will be in full force Tuesday nearly coast-to-coast.

East: Scattered afternoon thunderstorms will rumble over the eastern third of the nation, along with steamy heat and humidity.

Central U.S.: Morning storms are forecast in the mid-Mississippi Valley while the north-central states will see scattered thunderstorms. Some severe thunderstorms could bring hail and wind to eastern Colorado, far western Kansas and the Panhandle of Oklahoma.

West: Typical dry heat will bake most of the West on Tuesday, though some showers will keep the Northwest cool.

Weather history for June 24: A microburst from a thunderstorm led to the crash of a 727 jet at JFK airport, killing 112 people. In 1989, heavy snow blanketed the mountains of Wyoming.

In 1994, the temperature rocketed to a high of 122 degrees in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. In 2007, a record low of 47 degrees was set in Scranton, Pa.
