The possession of child pornography is now illegal in Japan.

The upper house of Japan's parliament passed a measure Wednesday that revises laws that previously banned only the production and distribution of child porn, according to various reports.

The lower house of parliament passed the measure earlier.

The new law bans photos and videos and levies the equivalent of a $9,800 fine or imprisonment up to one year, according to the South China Morning Post.

Until now, Japan was the only member of the G7 group of industrialized countries that had not banned possession of child porn. More than 70 countries have banned the possession of such materials.

The law could become active as early as next month, according to the Japan Times.
