Ross County is the home of Chillicothe, the first capital of Ohio, dating back to 1803, and Edward Tiffin, Ohio’s first governor.

The 200th Ohio Bicentennial kicked off in Chillicothe in March 2003 with an array of festivities, including: casting of the commemorative Bicentennial Bell, joint session of Ohio General Assembly, grand opening of renovated Adena State Memorial, Ohio Statehood Commemorative Stamp Issue, Governors Bicentennial Ball, plus many other events.

Chillicothe is the county seat and the largest city in Ross County with a population of 23,000. The Ross County population is 74,800. Other towns in Ross County include Bainbridge, Kingston, Frankfort, Clarksburg and Adelphi. Chillicothe High School, six Ross County school districts, Pickaway/Ross JVS and two private schools support the strong educational system. Ross County has excellent parks and recreational facilities and is undergoing rapid, well-maintained development.

Ross County is the site of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and Mound City Visitor Center, as well as the famous Tecumseh Outdoor Theatre. The famous Majestic Theatre is the nation’s oldest continuously operating theater, which opened more than 150 years ago.
